Iconographic description

The threshold between room 3 and 4 has a decoration with white octagons on black background with a border of black and white stripes. Covering composition of octagons, as disposed on the threshold of the room, appeared for the first time in Rome between the end of the first century BC and the beginning of the first century AD and began to spread during the first century AD, showing gradually more complexe solutions with the addition of decorative elements and polychromy (MEDER J. 2003, Podni mozaici u Hrvatskoj od 1. do 6. stoljeća. Reference to the part

Threshold between rooms 3 and 4

Description

At time of excavation (1988) the geometric black and white mosaic was preserved only on the central part of the threshold between rooms 3 and 4. The mosaic shows evident deformation – the threshold mosaic, laying upon the wall foundations, is clearly higher than the mosaics in room 3 and 4 – that caused numerous cracks of the mosaic surface. In 1990 the mosaic threshold was lifted. The fragment (F-01-ISZ) is kept at the Restoration Center of the Institute for Protection of Cultural Heritage of Slovenia (Poljanska 40, Ljubljana).
